All the journals indexed in LILACS are submitted to a selection process that includes the analisis of the presentation and standardization format, institutional and geographical endogamy and content evaluation by experts, which are evaluated to preserve the quality standard in the information registered in the LILACS.
Each country from the Latin American and Caribbean of Health Sciences Information System has been responsible for the national journals selection since October 1982. The selection has been made by their National Coordinating Centers (CCN).
Common criteria had been developed to allow this decentralization that must be adopted by all the countries (Journal Selection Criteria for the LILACS Database).
There is LILACS International Journal Selection Committee that countersigns the titles selected by the National Selection Committee, periodically evaluates the journal indexed in LILACS database and promotes studies about scientific publications in Latin America and Caribbe, and BIREME coordinates this Committee.
The information about journals selected in each country must be sent to BIREME for recognition of the new journals and its inclusion in SeCS database - Serials in Health Sciences.
Brazilian scientific journals are selected by the National Selection Committee, cordinated by BIREME. When necessary, BIREME appeals to the Specialized Coordinating Centers in Dentistry, Nursing and Psychology for the selection of journals in these thematic areas.
The frequently asked questions on Journal Selection for the LILACS Database are answered in: Frequently Asked Questions - Journal Selection.
